Who is God?
God's name is 'The LORD.' He is gracious with whom he wills to be gracious, and he will show mercy to whom he will show mercy (Exo.33.19). He is sovereign over man's ability to believe in Christ (John 12.39-40). His presence among his people makes all the difference for them (Exo.33.3-4, 15-16). He condescends to meet with man (Exo.33.11). He commanded Jesus to declare eternal life (John 12.49-50).
Who is man?
Man is lost without The LORD (Exo.33.15). Sinful man cannot survive an encounter with God's unfiltered holiness and glory (Exo.33.3, 20). Man's motives can hide behind his words (John 12.4-6). Loving man's glory instead of God's glory is the worst swap possible, and it prevents a sincere and open confession of faith in Christ (John 12.42-43).
Where is the Gospel?
As The LORD made himself known to Moses, so Jesus makes God known to all who are his (Exo.33; cf. John 1.18, 12.45). God's commandment through Jesus is eternal life (John 12.50). Jesus came into the world as light, "so that whoever believes in [him] may not remain in darkness" (John 12.46).
