Who is God?
God uses unlikely instruments to proclaim his glory and faithfulness (Num.23.5-10, 16-24). “God is not a man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” (Num.23.19). God fights for his people (Ps.64.7). He rules over his creation (Ps.65.5-13).
Who is man?
Rich men think they can buy anything, but God’s purposes stand (Num.23.11-12). Wicked men search diligently for injustice, and, “the inward mind and heart of a man are deep!” (Ps.64.6). God’s redeemed people are prone to looking around fearfully at the wicked and their schemes (Ps.64.1-6). But we should be comforted by the fact that God fights for us (Ps.64.7-10). We are richly blessed by our loving Father, even on this sin cursed earth (Ps.65.5-13; cf. Matt.5.45).
Where is the Gospel?
Balak serves as an example in Numbers 23 that “the peoples plot in vain” (Ps.2.1; Acts.4.25-26). Their plotting is silly because God has determined to bless his people through his Anointed, i.e. Jesus. God saves the righteous who call out to him, and he punishes the wicked who persecute his people (Ps.64.7-10; cf. Phil.1.27-30). Furthermore, “when iniquities prevail against me, [He atones] for our transgressions” (Ps.65.3; cf. Rom.7.21-8.1).
