Who is God?
God is not fickle in his love. Rather, his is faithful. His selection for affection baffles human reasoning (Deut.7.7-8). "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God" (Ps.90.2).
Who is man?
If we are to pursue godliness, we must obey God and get rid of those things that would lead us into sin (Deut.7.4; cf. Rom.13.14). We speak in our own hearts, and God knows and is concerned with what we say there (Deut.7.17ff). Compared to God, man’s life is brief and full of toil, and when we meditates on this we learn (Ps.90.3-4; 9-12).
Where is the Gospel?
Obedience brings blessing (Deut.7.11-16). Since we are disobedient, we need Jesus. His obedience brings unrivaled, divine blessing, and in him we are God’s holy people (Deut.7.6; 2Cor.5.21; 1 Pet.2.9-10). The Lord’s return is imminent, and we who expect it will be satisfied in him (Ps.90.13-14; cf. Matt.25).
